Jetty4Shores Revitalisation Project

Coffs Harbour 2017

The Jetty4Shores is a highly valued public precinct rich in cultural history and is a popular recreational destination for residents and tourists.

The Jetty4shores Revitalisation Project recognises that urban design is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric.

With community-based participation at its center, Coffs Harbour Council has collaborated with local design and engineering professionals, artists and the community to revitalise this important public precinct, integrating landscape, art and built form to create places for people to live and engage with each other, and the physical place around them.

Following a rigorous public consultation process, a community inspired Jetty4Shores master plan was developed by Coffs Harbour Council, which addressed pragmatic and landscape specific needs, particularly relating to coastal restoration, visitation and access, safe usage, and sustainability.

High use public areas were identified for substantial improvements – the Stage1 Area, the Market Area, the Plaza and Boardwalk, and the Jetty Walk Way.

The urban design features refurbishment of existing amenities, a suite of new picnic shelters, and a Stage located around the Market Area which reflects the ‘flight of the wedge-tailed shearwater’. The new structures are designed with a robust elemental language of galvanized steel, brightly coloured soffits, and large sectioned timber screening with inscribed images of marine life, designed by local school students.

Throughout the precinct numerous public artworks depicting the coastal character of the Jetty have been created by local artists and school students, and inspired by the sites natural and cultural history.

Recognising ‘creativity’ to be fundamental to its long term sustainability, the place-making process has capitalized on the local community’s assets, inspiration, potential and input, resulting in a quality public precinct that contributes to people’s health, happiness, and well being.

Andersens Commercial Showroom Fitout & Signage

Coffs Harbour 2016

Fisher Design + Architecture were engaged to undertake the commercial showroom fitout and signage design, with a brief to create an innovative retail space which inspires; a space that customers would look forward to visiting.

The showroom design uses colour, texture, and raw materials to provide a neutral backdrop, designed to engage and pull customers through the variety of product displays.

Design tables are provided throughout the showroom with inspiration material, where sales staff and customers meet to discuss design and product information, and explore samples.

The industrial aesthetic is robust and cost effective, with the modest materials palette and clear spatial planning creating visual clarity, allowing synchronicity between the fit out, product and brand.

Graphic design plays an important role. Integrating branding and graphic messages into the exterior building design provides a big impact with minimal construction and cost. The vibrant graphics enliven the exterior, and define display points of the showroom.

The showroom was designed in ArchiCad, allowing advanced and efficient 3D modeling and documentation. Presentation of computer generated 3D views and walkthrough’s enabled the client to visualize and comprehend the design, providing valuable assistance in the design process. The computer model was saved in a user friendly format which could be opened on any computer, and shared with the consultant team and the builder, for design development, detailing, and construction.

Sawtell Surf Life Saving Club

Sawtell 2015- present

The Sawtell Surf Life saving Club is a highly valued community asset with rich local history, and is a popular recreational destination for residents and tourists.

The Surf Club Refurbishment Project presents the opportunity to provide a much needed revitalisation of the existing site and surf club building, and transform it to create a landmark beachside destination with an iconic public building which contributes to its users safety, health, happiness, and well being.

Working closely with SSLC representative Gary Murray, the design was developed to provide effective planning to economise space, rationalise amenity requirements, get the most for the budget, and create an environment with a sense of ‘place’- inspiring spaces inside and out that function well and that will define the club.

The existing building uses large amounts of energy and provides less than ideal living and working conditions for its occupants. Internal spaces are difficult to cool and heat, have poor lighting, poor ventilation, and solar penetration.

The vision is to revitalise the existing Surf Life Saving Club facility to establish a valuable public asset of outstanding design and visual amenity- a safe and healthy environment for people to enjoy the surf, and interact with each other and the physical place around them.

With a focus on affordability, refurbishment in lieu of demolition and rebuild is considered more sustainable in terms of saving in the embodied impact of materials, resource efficiency, waste disposal and architectural value.

The design aims to utilise the existing structure and infrastructure to create a more sustainable urban environment with a low environmental impact, which is resource efficient in both construction and operation, and create a healthy building with an optimum efficiency that allows its users to operate at their highest functionality.

The user experience will be enhanced with inspiring spaces inside and out that are ‘engaging’, with cultural connections being made through interpretive artwork panels integrated within the building fabric which communicate stories of the Sawtell club and community.

The Sawtell Surf Club renovation aims to make tangible connections with the surrounding environment through a creative use of materials, light and volume, while addressing security, surveillance, and clear identification of public/ private space.

A healthier environment will be provided through a building which is more energy efficient, cheaper to operate and easier to maintain. With a focus on flexibility, the building will be designed to grow and change as needs change.

Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore Amenities

Coffs Harbour 2012

As part of a major Coffs Harbour City Council Jetty Foreshores improvement program, the brief was to revitalise the precinct though provision of new rest / picnic / BBQ shelters, upgrade of selected existing shelters, and refurbishment of existing public amenities buildings.

Three sizes and two types of shelter structures were designed to serve the precinct, grouped to correspond to the evolving Coffs Harbour City council masterplan. One large and seven small existing shelters were demolished to make way for a similar number of new shelters, each providing larger and more-effective covered area and more seating.

The new structures are designed from a robust elemental language of galvanized steel and large sectioned timber screening, washed aggregate concrete and contrasting brightly coloured soffits. The design sought to develop a new and appropriate language for the waterfront park area.

Refurbishment of the two existing public amenities buildings included upgrade of fixtures, fittings and finishes, provision of additional disabled facilities, and application of the new language to a tired existing 1960’s style concrete block and gabled roof structure.
